Now you can request rooms with exercise equipment next to the desk. That is if you’re staying at a TRYP by Windham property. A number of Fitness rooms in the TRYP hotels are equipped with exercise equipment.

Rooms include a state-of-the-art treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical machine; complimentary exercise mat; fitness attire including a t-shirt and shorts; and mineral water and extra towels because even when you have your own machine you should wipe it down.

Fitness rooms will be in TRYP by Wyndham hotels in the New York City Times Square South flagship hotel opening this winter. The upcoming opening of the TRYP Quebec Hotel PUR in Quebec City will also have Fitness rooms on the roster. TRYP San Jose Sabana in san Jose, Costa Rica already has a number of Fitness rooms.

Apparently many people have the same idea as we’ve seen numerous attempts at bringing fitness to the office. These have included treadmill desks, elliptical office chairs, an office chair that doubles as a workout machine, and even some desks designed to accommodate a full-sized bicycle. And while all these may allow you to squeeze in a workout while you work, a problem remains… what do you do with the fitness focused desk when you’re not working out?

Here is where the FitDesk Pedal Desk comes in. It is an innovative product that allows a person to exercise comfortably on a stationary bike while using a laptop computer or playing a video game. With the armrest you also use a desktop computer keyboard and set this up front of a regular desk. And when you’re done spinning, the FitDesk has the others beat, because the collapsible design means it can be folded up and put out of sight.

The FitDesk probably isn’t the way you’d spend a full work day, but for those times when you need to squeeze in a ride but can’t get away, you can unfold it and go!

One of our pet peeves about home fitness is that it shouldn’t overtake the home. But Kettler USA offers a solution with its new foldable treadmills that have arrived in time for the holiday. The Verso TX1 and TX3 treadmills both feature advanced electronics with heart-rate-control programming using a Polar heart rate (HR) chest strap to provide efficient, effective, and beneficial workouts.

These further offer options for goal-oriented routines of distance, time and calories burned, while a heart rate monitor can help users track their cardio rhythm, which takes the guesswork out of balancing fitness and healthy exercise. Once the initial programming controls are set, a one-touch button allows the user to start the next workout at the same preferences, saving time and creates a well-balanced workout regimen.

And after getting a good solid walk or run on the treadmill, it folds up and doesn’t need to overtake a house.

The run up to the holiday season means that you’d have to be a hardy soul to want to head out doors and run. If winter chills are too much for you there is another option. Johnson Health Tech North America offers a passport to the world of virtual running. This week the company introduced a new breed of consumer treadmills that are equipped with the Passport media player featuring Virtual Active technology, and these deliver high-definition scenery to enhance the workout experience.

These include real destination footage with matching ambient sounds, and display workout data onscreen. The Passport media player further offers wireless connectivity between the treadmill and onscreen visuals that allows for the information onscreen to match speed and elevation.

“The Passport media player lets you begin your workout in your living room and finish in the Italian countryside,” said Andrew Kolman, senior product manager – console technology at Johnson Health Tech North America. “You escape the confines of your regular workout routine, while enjoying a truly dynamic experience.”

The technology is now being introduced to the consumer market and is available this month on the AFG 7.1 AT treadmill and the LIVESTRONG LSPRO2 treadmill. Each machine comes equipped with two programs – the American Southwest and Northern Italy. Individual trails include the Las Vegas Strip, Grand Canyon, Venetian cityscape, Italian countryside and more. Additional programs are also available for purchase online.

If you love running on the beach, but don’t have a beach right out of the door you don’t have to settle for running on a regular treadmill to get that same style of soft on the feet running. Occupying just a little more space than a commercial grade treadmill, Sproing is a new soft platform training machine that promises a lower impact ‘run’ while burning more calories and providing a more intense workout. It is thus ideal for anyone who suffers from consent knee pain that might otherwise also keep you from running.

Though the Sproing appears to be a treadmill at first glance, this new machine has no moving parts. Instead, Sproing has a soft pad ‘running’ surface and uses bungee resistance instead of a moving platform to hold the user in place. The resistance of running against the bungee forces you to run on the balls of your feet instead of landing on your heels; and with no moving platform, the risk of falling off of the platform is virtually eliminated.

(Video after the jump)

The Sproing is advertising that their new machine cuts knee impact by 50-percent compared to a treadmill and has 41-percent less impact on your back. Sproing comes with two different low impact surfaces – one filled with air for an easier workout and one filled with high-density foam for an intense beach-run workout. Not only does the the soft surface absorbs impact; but even though the Sproing has no moving belt, built in sensors and an onboard display tell you how far you have gone. “It literally measures each of your footsteps and stops when you stop. Just like running outside.”

With an estimated retail price of $5,999, the new Sproing is being marketed to health clubs, rehabilitation centers and athletic organizations, such as professional sports teams. But for those who love to run, it is worth bouncing over to see what they have to offer.

We first reported about the AlterG anit-gravity treadmills last year, and this week it was announced that the NASA-inspired technology would be adopted for use at the HNRH Regional Rehab, National Rehabilitation Hospital’s network of outpatient centers located in Maryland and Northern Virginia, including the Harbor Hospital in Baltimore. The AlterG treadmill will be available to patients undergoing physical therapy.

“This equipment will enable our patients to effectively advance their therapy allowing them to achieve more efficient results while decreasing their recovery time,” said Josh Billings, physical therapist and the practice’s clinic director. “By reducing the weight placed on their joints and muscles, they are able to complete an effective workout with less strain on the body.”

The technology was originally developed by NASA so that astronauts could work out in space, and now is used for physical therapy and rehabilitation. Currently there are less than 200 facilities in the nation that offer the treadmill, but it looks like soon AlterG will landing so more people can take advantage of the space age technology.

Last year we saw a few goofy ideas like the treadmill desk, which is something we praised but in all truthfulness knew was a crazy idea. But yet, every time we hit the gym somewhere we see people checking e-mail, looking at apps or even trying to surf the Web on their mobile smartphones.

So with that in mind, we love the idea of the newly announced ProForm TrailRunner 4.0 treadmill, which features a 10-inch touch screen monitor with Web browser powered by Android. This allows users to put in the distance while still watching news, sports highlights or accessing social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Users can further check and send e-mail while treading the time away.

The treadmill is integrated with iFit Live Technology, which further provides customized workout programs that can be downloaded directly to the Android-powered touchscreen. Courses are easily downloaded to the treadmill with map views on the console and real terrain features with automatic incline adjustments. Users can get the most out of iFit Live™ Technology with the built-in web browser, which will automatically upload the workout results to iFit.com, creating an easily managed profile.

The treadmill is further built with ProTech Advanced Adjustable Cushioning, so you can feel like you’re practically running on a cloud. The unit’s motor also includes a self-cooling system to ensure that the components remain cool and go the distance, while the 2-ply treadbelt makes for sturdy, slip proof running surface.

So while it isn’t a treadmill desk, it should offer enough to let users interact and put in a little more distance before heading back to an actual desk.

Finalists were selected from this range of submissions and the winners of the challenge will be announced this week at the Consumer Electronics Show.

We found there to be some very interesting finalists, but we’re pulling for Gymbox, which provides weekly, full-length workouts on demand. These include Step Aerobics, Kickboxing, Yoga, Pilates, Core Strength, Treadmill, Cycle, Strength Training, and Stretch. New classes are added weekly so you never have to repeat the same workout twice.

A doctor and a professor agree; the LifeSpan TR1200i folding treadmill is a great product. And by a doctor we mean retailer Treadmill Doctor, which named the product the “Best New Treadmill” in its 2011 fitness equipment review. The TR1200i, which is made by PCE Health and Fitness, was also named “Best Treadmill under $1000” by Fitness Professor Review.

The folding treadmill earned high marks for its quality construction, walking area and value, while Fitness Professor offered that the “all new TR1200i offers the quality consumers are looking for in an affordable package plus LifeSpan’s wonderful Fitness Club software.”

The software provides users with a personalized online account, where they can manage exercise data and view vital statistics in one place. The software can be used to set goals and plan workout routines, where the information can be downloaded by a USB port and uploaded to a computer. This information can be further shared with other LifeSpan devices including blood pressure monitors and digital bathroom scales.

What makes this unit stand out for us is that it can fold up nicely, and be tucked away in a corner or stashed in a closet. And this can be done without compromising on functionality. The TR1200i features a one-in deck with eight compression shocks, so you can run without fearing that you’ll go through the floor – and it also offers 15 levels of incline so you can do your indoor hill repeats as well. The unit even offers stereo speakers so you can plug in your MP3 player and get running.

This could be the treadmill that will get you to a better healthier life.

When one thinks of a “lab” you probably think of white rats and mad scientists, but the folks at D3 Multisport aren’t looking to become super villains. Instead they may be looking to create super athletes with their D3 Energy Lab in Boulder, Colorado. The company opened its world-class facility for indoor cycling and training late last month.

And while Boulder and the surrounding area are great for training, this facility will feature state-of-the-art indoor cycling equipment to provide riders with significant benefits in a short amount of time, and more importantly no matter what the weather.

Up to eight riders can train at the same time, on their own bikes, on the same virtual course, which is projected onto the wall. Courses can be customized, and the system’s Interactive Real Course Videos allow parameters from famous courses (including Tour de France stages and Ironman courses) to be input and raced. This allows riders to measure their performance against one another, and themselves, as the system measures and records a variety of performance parameters, including speed, calories and power output.

This networked, multi-rider feature allows CompuTrainer to provide the most interesting indoor bike experience available. USA Triathlon and USA Cycling test and train their athletes using CompuTrainer, which can help increase a rider’s cycling power 20 to 30 percent while boosting speed 2 to 4 mph; and now this technology is available to riders of all ages and abilities in the Boulder area. Classes are up and running and sessions are available mornings, lunchtime, evenings and weekends, and for a limited time, new riders can experience a session for free.

The center offers programs that include group training and coaching, and provides coached indoor cycling, brick workouts using the facilities treadmills and core strength options. Punch passes, one-on-one, group and 8-week class sessions are available, along with corporate team building events.

Much of this will be spurred by a growing fitness mantra, and it won’t be limited to the United States – as developing regions including Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East will be looking to get toned as well.

The new market report further suggests that the despite an economic slowdown, fitness related gear will continue to sell – and hopefully this won’t be limited to products offering quick fixes and easy solutions. You need to sweat and burn to earn that weight loss after all. The United States will represent the single largest market for physical fitness equipment, with Asia-Pacific emerging as the fastest growing regional market.

What is worth noting is that currently about one-sixth of the US population used a treadmill in 2009, meaning that walking distances without going anywhere remains popular. But the report indicates that cycling to nowhere might be the new way to shed pounds, as exercise bikes now represent the fasted growing product segment in the global physical fitness equipment market.

We be sure to watch for the new products, from the good to the bad and everything in between.

In space no one can hear you scream. That’s an old science fiction line of course, but it has truth to it because sound doesn’t travel in a vacuum. What can travel in a vacuum is you, as in you can still run in a vacuum. The question of course is why would you want to do so?

Well, the answer is that running results in pounding on the joints, and this repetitive pounding on knees, hips and ankles isn’t good. The irony is that running is great for the heart. So how do you keep the running and reduce the pounding? A trip to the International Space Station would work, but that would be pricey. The alternative is an anti-gravity treadmill.

That might sound like something out of Star Trek but the technology is around today. The Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill allows runners to essentially climb into a shoe shaped enclosure, which utilizes pressure regulation that can reduce body weight from 0 percent to 80 percent. Users still have to suit up with a special pair of shorts, and while not as cumbersome as a full space suit, these aren’t exactly your normal running attire either.

Likewise, the system might cost far less than a trip to space, but currently this system is really meant more for medical facilities and higher-end health clubs. Several professional sports franchises, as well as some university sports programs are currently using the Alter G Anti Gravity Treadmill. Hopefully it will eventually come down to Earth in price and be available for the masses.

We’ve seen many attempts to converge technology together. Some, like the bicycle treadmill are just confusing, but the SkateCycle seems like real evolution and innovation. While it could be called a “hubless skateboard” that’s not quite the most accurate description for this deck – or rather deckles device. The FreeRider SkateCycle, which was conceived by Alon Karpman from Brooklyn Workshop with the help of Antonio Mezo, takes the basic skateboard concept, but ditches the hubs and trucks, and even the classic deck.

Hence this is why it isn’t really a skateboard, because there is no board. Instead, it features two wheels that are hinged at the front and back, while the axels inside the wheels essentially serve as the footpads. The hinges allow not only for easy folding when not in use, but also let rides making some interesting rotational turns. The video below shows you this board can do some tricks.

While we’re not expecting to see this in the next X-Games, this could be a real contender for the skateboard of the future, even if it isn’t technically a skateboard. And unlike many concepts, this one is real and can be purchased today.
