Work Your Core on Water with Paddle Board Yoga

Yoga is showing up everywhere these days, even on water. Paddle board yoga, a combination of paddle boarding and yoga, is the latest craze in Florida and with June just around the corner, could become this summer’s hot new exercise.

Paddle boarding is a form of surfing while standing up. Unlike traditional surf boards, paddle boards are thicker and more buoyant. The sport has been around for some time and provides a low impact, high-intensity workout. Combined with yoga, paddle boarding becomes a completely different kind of workout hitting every muscle in your body, especially your core which is used to keep you from falling off the board. Classes, which can be up to 90 minutes long, include everything from stretches to sun salutations, all performed on the board. Read the rest of this entry »

Milan Design Week 2012: TechnoGym Brings the Tech

At last week’s Milan Design Week 2012 Technogym introduced a new line of exercise machines that might be ready for the dance club. This included the CROSS Personal Trainer, which look so pretty you might feel bad working up a sweat on it. It includes an integrated VISIOweb display so you can watch TV or surf the Internet, but it also includes a range of training programs to help you get the most out of your workout. The elliptical machine has the promise to offer a smooth and impact free workout , but it still looks like something we’d expect to see any European rave.

Device Lets You Know the Quality of the Air Out There

While it is possible to see smoke, and even to some degree smog, it is sometimes hard to know what the quality of the air might be. For many, even a little pollution in the air can go a long way towards big respiratory problems. Unfortunately, it isn’t so easy as just looking out the window to know whether the air quality is good enough for extensive physical activities.

A new personal monitoring device may make it easier to know whether you might want to keep the activities indoors. The MircoPEM was created by North Carolina-based RTI international, and is small enough to be worn on your body and help you know the quality of the air out there. It can measure pollution content of the surrounding air, and monitor your workout levels at the same time – and more importantly inform you if you should cease activity. Made in America: SilverSport

Most of us who frequent the gym know that it can be a place with some ‘funky‘ smells. Not because the attendants do not keep it clean, but because some of the materials in the equipment like vinyl, rubber and plastics can be difficult to rid of smells. The warm and humid climate, along with the human contact is the perfect breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria to grow and thrive. This is where the company SilverSport saw a need and they have developed a line of products to help your workout be as clean and odorless as possible. Read the rest of this entry »

Can’t Make the Gym? Go Online

A Flirty Girl Fitness virtual session. (The Canadian Press)

You can find plenty of exercise tips and video demonstrations online, helping to make working out at home affordable and accessible without having to sign up and pay for a pricey gym membership and personal trainer. Unfortunately, like your Jane Fonda VHS tapes of yore, a lot of the Web content is infrequently updated and moves in a one-way direction, meaning that, with the exception for forums, you can’t ask your virtual trainers for feedback.

But a story from the Canadian Press is following a new trend of home exercises where users can stream live online fitness content and updated on-demand videos, creating a virtual gym within their homes. In addition to the convenience, these virtual gyms allow the gym-phobic to get fitness instruction without ever stepping foot in a facility.

Like a real gym, however, you will have to pay for the resource. But one gym profiled in the story, Flirty Girl Fitness, a women’s only center in Toronto, said that 6,000 people are using its online service, which features access to live classes.

The virtual gym won’t do much to encourage motivation, but it’s one less excuse you’ll have for not hitting the gym.

Inactive America

While we’re happy that you’re reading this, we’d like to encourage all of our readers to get out there and get a bit more active. According to the recently released Physical Activity Council (PAC) study, inactivity levels in the United States has risen to 68.2 million people, up from 67.2 million in 2010. This included adults ages 18 and older, and those not participating in any of the physical activities measured continued to increase, rising from 58.7 million in 2010 to 60 million in 2011.

The good news is that PAC, a partnership of six major trade associations in the sports, fitness, and leisure industries, reported that inactivity among children ages six to 12 fell slightly from 4.6 million people in 2010 to 4.5 million people in 2011. This may be an early indication that efforts to engage children in sports, recreation and other related physical activities are starting to have a slight effect on America’s youngest generation. The research is part of the 2012 Participation Report, an annual study tracking sports, fitness and recreation participation in the United States.
