There is a new Trek ready for the roads. The company has introduced its high-anticipated 2013 Domane – which is Latin for King’s Crown. This new road racing bicycling will surely handle virtually any bump in the road. Designed for the rough road conditions found in the spring classics courses, it was developed with input from Fabian Cancellara, who won the Strade Bianche aboard the Domane in its race debut, and members of the RADIOSHACK NISSAN TREK team. Hydration packs are fantastic for carrying along water or other beverages for a long bike ride, hike or run. These are easy enough to fill up from a faucet but less so on the go. Now the Source Universal Tap Adapter makes it easier to refill the reservoir through the drink tube rather than in the opening in the back. The UTA valve works with different kinds of taps and even water bottles, the latter needing a bit of gravity of course. From the wink the pressure is all you’ll need.
This allows a new way to fill up, but also gives new meaning to backwash. Read the rest of this entry »

There was actually a time when football was played without helmets, and batters in baseball just headed to the plate with their cap. Times have changed, and football, baseball and hockey all require helmets to be worn. Cycling and many winter sports are now seeing helmets being used.
Last fall skateboard maker Freebord launched its “Wear A Helmet 4ST” campaign, and has called upon riders to wear a helmet every time they ride. This comes after Sam Trowbridge (ST), a Freebord pro team member, suffered a fatal brain injury last year while Freebording. He was not wearing a helmet. The company coped with the tragic loss of one of its own by trying to inspire preventative measures. Wear a Helmet 4ST is part of an ongoing effort to get all riders, not just freeborders, to wear a helmet.

There are many specialty sites, and this month saw the launch of Heart Rate Watch Reviews from Yakka, Inc. The company specializes in under-served information market, and the site was born out of Emil Yau of Yakka’s own enthusiasm for an active lifestyle.
“I put a high value on living a healthy and active lifestyle. While regular exercise and healthy dieting is important, monitoring your heart rate can also be important,” states Yau. “Heart rate watches can be a vital part of an exercise program. They can help you target your heart rate to stay within specific zones whether for upping your exercise regimen or because of existing health conditions that require it.”
Having another opinion and a way to compare devices sounds good to us.

You won’t take flight with this one, but the Jet Backpack from Italy’s O-Range will let you catch some air – inside the pack! The patented Air-range inflatable padding system is designed to replace the dense foam that most backpacks provide for comfort.
The water-resistant pack features an interior valve that can be inflated, and the idea here is to make the backpack both more comfortable while providing a bit of protection as well. It is also designed to be breathable to avoid all that sweat on the back. There are plenty of internal pockets to keep electronics dry, and the company even has a solar panel version available to charge up those electronics on the go.

Based on the traditional Finnish blades for use in the woods – where a good blade really mattered – Spyderco has introduced the Puukko. This PlainEdge CPM-S30V Scandinavian ground blade blends together equal parts artistic expression, traditional tool with modern blade steel and high tech cutting features. The Spyderco/Tuominen Puukko offers a single curving cutting edge and a flat level spine with a rounded wood handle, while the level blade spine and lack of choil allow positioning the thumb directly on the spine to concentrate force and leverage forward and downward. We’ve seen more and more fitness machines actually supplying power back to the grid, and now with the EcoFit Networking System and Display from SportArt Fitness, users can see how much energy they are producing while working out and actually get rewarded for their efforts.
With these machines users are provided with data on the electricity they are producing on in-club digital media displays; allows for localized facility and environmental, “green” messaging on the display screen and includes a “points” accumulation system for energy created by the user. These points can then be redeemed at the club or a hotel, university or school with fitness facilities – building brand loyalty and user loyalty for the facility. Video after the jump

Life Fitness wants to give your spinning class a major redesign with its new exercise bike, the LifeCycle GX.
Announced at last week’s IHRSA 2012, the LifeCycle GX offers everything from an ultra-durable frame to a built-in computer designed to record your every move. However, the bike’s most striking feature is its rear flywheel design (there’s no front wheel like you’d find on most of today’s group exercise bikes). This new design, along with the bike’s zinc oxide-coated frame, help protect it from sweat, dirt, and rust. Read the rest of this entry »

There are times that “getting into hot water” is a good thing, such as when it is cold outside and you could use a warm beverage. The Jompy takes this a step further, as it provides a way for campers, backpackers and hikers to get hot water from their hydration packs, while also ensuring that the water is clean and safe to drive.
