Xenith X1: Building a Better Brain Bucket
Helmets should be top of the list for new gear, as football season gets ready to kick off. Concussions are an ongoing problem, and many teams use reconditioned helmets rather than new ones, which exacerbates the problem. There’s no complete safeguard for preventing head injuries for players who choose to go out on the field, but every little bit helps. Xenith, a company founded by a Harvard grad who played as quarterback on the varsity team, has a new design to help cushion and protect the head.

The helmet’s features include a new kind of shock absorber, each of which is attached to a shock bonnet. The helmet also has several adjustments to give each player a customized fit. The Aware Flow Shock Absorber manages impact energy by adjusting to the force of impact during compression. Several shock absorbers are placed on an internal liner called the Shock Bonnet. The bonnet minimizes the sudden movement of the head, which reduces the likelihood of concussion and other injury. Traditionally helmets rely on stiff, dense padding that’s often replaced from season to season as it wears out.
Helmets are only as good as their fit, which is why the Fit Seeker function of the helmet, which adapts to the head creating a custom fit, is a needed innovation. Through the helmet liner and buckled straps fine-tuning the fit is even more possible.
